ink in Residence | Balancing Drama and Calm: Inside Studio Doherty
Great design has a way of shifting the mood of a space - quietly, confidently, and often in unexpected ways.
ink in Residence is a new series from us exploring the spaces, creators and ideas that inspire the way people gather, host and simply unwind. Featuring across our blog and social channels, the series steps inside homes and places that align with our aesthetic sensibility, celebrating the designers shaping contemporary Australian spaces and beyond.
More than interiors with a vibe, these are environments designed with intention - places where colour, texture and atmosphere work together to create moments worth lingering in. ink in Residence looks at how great design influences the mood of a space and the experiences that unfold within it.
This first exploration features designer Mardi Doherty, Director of Studio Doherty, whose approach to interiors centres on finding a balance between bravery and restraint. Her studio is known for pushing creative boundaries while refining thoughtful details, ensuring each project carries its own distinctive character.
We think you’re going to love her work.
Studio Doherty’s work often explores the relationship between drama and calm in a space. Using natural light, texture and carefully considered materials to shape how a room feels and functions.
As Mardi puts it, “We have a constant hunger to make each project better than the previous - always testing new ideas and pushing ourselves.”
Elonera House
Light plays a defining role in many Studio Doherty projects, with windows and skylights carefully positioned to shape how a space evolves throughout the day.
Hawksburn House
Balancing drama and calm is central to the studio’s approach, creating interiors that feel both expressive and grounded.
Mardi recently featured on our socials as part of International Women’s Day, and we chose her with intention. We wanted to recognise her instinct to break the rules of traditional design - an approach that resonates strongly with the story of ink gin.
When ink was first created, it was developed with the same willingness to move beyond convention - embracing bold indigo colour without the usual constraints of the category. In doing so, we created a flavourful, balanced gin that stands apart.
Like Mardi’s interiors, ink Gin was never about following a formula, but about creating something distinctive that changes the mood of a space the moment it appears.
We’d happily enjoy an ink gin in any one of Mardi’s interiors. We think we’d be right at home

A cute and chaotic Engagement Party with Eddie Studio
Elke | founder of Eddie Design Studio and Soap Social
If you're looking for inspiration for your own engagement party, you're in the right place.
“What was meant to be a low-key engagement party quietly turned into a full brand job. Kind of kidding… but not really.”
We asked Elke a few questions about the night, and as you'd expect from a designer, the details did not disappoint.
Naturally, you have such a strong creative lens in your work as a designer. Tell us about how you leveraged your design instinct when planning your engagement party. Did it feel different because it was personal?
What was meant to be a low-key engagement party quickly turned into something closer to a creative project. The date happened to fall on Valentine’s Day, which naturally became the theme. It started with illustrated invitations Elke designed herself, something she loves doing but now often passes to her team at Eddie.
From there it snowballed. Menus, signage, handmade bunting, illustrated wine bottles and vintage tableware from op shops slowly built the atmosphere. Even her outfit became part of the story, a pink and red gingham dress handmade by her mum.
“We work with hospitality brands all the time,” Elke says. “I love creating little worlds and bringing an atmosphere to life, so it was impossible not to lean all the way in."
What was one detail from the night that felt most ‘you’?
“Probably the colour and my puffy gingham dress. The extra frills from the dress even ended up becoming decorations”
Paint the scene for us, what were people eating, drinking, listening to?
“The aim was romantic and generous, but relaxed enough that we could actually enjoy the night.
Food was a big grazing spread with cheeses, farmers-market meats, vegan dips and honeycomb. Family helped with pastas and salads, and Lachie’s brother made ceviche served with tostadas. My mum baked gluten-free and vegan cakes, and a friend made a strawberries-and-cream sponge that people were lining up to photograph before it was cut.
Drinks were DIY at a self-serve station we called Bar Valentine, where guests mixed Hugo spritzes, Ink gin and tonics, spicy margaritas and non-alcoholic spritzes with bowls of citrus and herbs for garnishes.
Decor was lace tablecloths, silver platters, gingham, candles and bunting everywhere. The playlist leaned happily into the theme, romantic classics like This Must Be The Place, Stand By Me and Harvest Moon.
The whole night felt warm, slightly chaotic in the best way, and full of our favourite people.”
What does hosting mean to you personally?
“For this celebration it was really about bringing people together. That said, I’ll always take any opportunity to have fun with the aesthetics.”
Did anything go wrong, and did it matter?
“The day before we were getting flood warnings, so the outdoor setup had to change. Hay bales meant for the garden ended up under cover, but everyone still fit perfectly and it only lightly sprinkled.
My only regret is not getting more photos of the bar and menus, but I was busy enjoying the fruits of my labour.”
What makes a gathering unforgettable?
“Good food and good drinks will always be talked about afterwards. People might forget the plates you used, but they’ll remember the ceviche or the cocktails.
More than anything though, it’s the feeling in the room, when people feel relaxed, looked after and a little spoiled.”

Our 10th B'day Party!
On the 22nd of November, we finally threw our official 10-year birthday party at our homeplace, Husk Farm Distillery.
A decade of Ink.Under the stars.Exactly how it should be.
The theme for the event was 'glitz & spritz'. We wanted a little bit of retro vintage, beautiful wobbly jelly shots and fun party food. On the menu was spring crudité, caviar crisps served in a chip packet, freshly shucked gin soaked oysters and of course smashed cheeseburgers.
We had pop up bars serving negronis, martinis, G&Ts and spritzes. No one went thirsty. No one went hungry.
We had DJ Mutcespo spinning vinyl well into the night. All our guests contributed to a big collaborative 'birthday card' painting, which is now hanging in the Ink Gin Gallery at the distillery forevermore.
Pulling this party together was a real family effort. Youngest sissy Claudia made all the decorations, mirror ball-ing everything she could find. Edwina baked two INCREDIBLE cakes, complete with rosella gin jan & butterfly pea cake. Check them out below, they are seriously impressive.
After Harriet said a few words, we raised a glass to ten years of Ink Gin, the people, the place, and the journey so far.
Here’s to the next chapter!!

A visit to the world’s largest lemon myrtle farm.
We took a trip to the world’s largest lemon myrtle farm - discover why this Aussie ingredient means so much to us.
Brian has re-entered the villa!
Our former Ink Gin Resident Artist, Brian Connolly, has just moved in... Again!
In 2022, Brian made history by winning the first-ever Ink Art competition.
His winning artwork, “Some Place Else”, was part of his remarkable Face Towards the Sun collection.
Now, Brian is back with a brand-new exhibition that is gracing the walls of the Ink Gallery at Husk Farm Distillery -The Heart of the Garden.
A Glimpse Into 'The Heart of the Garden'
Brian Connolly’s latest solo exhibition, The Heart of the Garden, offers an exploration of the profound connection we share with nature. The exhibition is an invitation to step into a world of peace, stillness, and reflection - qualities that nature offers in abundance. Inspired by the serene beauty of Bundjalung Country, also known as Byron Bay, where Brian resides in the tranquil hinterlands, this collection captures the lush landscapes and the calming beauty that surround him.
Nature as a Muse: Inspiration from Byron Bay’s Hinterlands
The exhibition draws its inspiration from the natural wonders of Byron Bay, where the forest meets the sea. In this paradise, Brian finds himself surrounded by an endless source of wonder, peace, and serenity. His artwork reflects the contemplative moments he experiences in nature - moments of reflection and quiet meditation that often go unnoticed in our fast-paced lives.
Each piece in The Heart of the Garden embodies the stillness and beauty of nature, inviting the viewer to pause and reconnect with their inner peace. The muses in the artwork, deeply immersed in nature’s embrace, evoke a sense of awe and reverence for the land. They remind us of the importance of slowing down, taking a breath, and appreciating the quiet moments that nature has to offer.
Now on display at the Ink Gallery, The Heart of the Garden exhibition will be running until the end of April. Come and immerse yourself in Brian’s latest works - no booking required. While you're here, why not book a table to enjoy our warm hospitality and soak in the stunning views of the Tweed Valley?
Don't miss the opportunity to witness this stunning collection up close. You can also view The Heart of the Garden online here.
