Best Beaches on the NSW / QLD Caldera Coast

The Caldera Coast is the coastal fringe from Ballina to Burleigh Heads and the adjoining coastal plain from Mt Tamborine in the northwest to Canungra, down the western margin of the Border ranges to Kyogle, Casino and Lismore, all centred on Mt Warning and the Tweed Valley.

The Caldera Coast does not respect state borders, instead it straddles QLD and NSW. It’s a geological zone with its own distinct geographic, geologic, hydrological, ecological and climatic characteristics.

Here are some of our favourite beaches on the Caldera Coast!

The Pass, Byron Bay NSW

  1. Cabarita Beach - enjoy a picturesque scenic walk to Norries headland and take in the views to both Byron Bay (on a clear day you can see the lighthouse!) and north to Kingscliff. The headland also boasts epic sunset views, so pack a picnic and raise a glass as the sun goes down.

  2. Dreamtime Beach, Fingal Head - the name says it all. Its idyllic basalt rick formations formed 23 million years ago by ancient lava flows from the nearby extinct shield volcano, Mount Warning. It’s one of the Tweed Valley’s hidden gems.

  3. 7 Mile Beach, Lennox - Four legged friends are welcome at parts of this pristine stretch of sandy beach. One of the quieter beaches on this list, and we definitely recommend a romantic beach day here.

4. The Pass, Byron Bay - a surfers delight. Famously recognised as being a favourite amongst surfers, the Pass is also a great spot to watch passing whales and pods of dolphins.

5. Rainbow Bay, Coolangatta - this white sandy beach famously hosts the World Surfing League competition each year. Not only does it have ideal surfing conditions, but it’s a great swimming spot for all ages. With built up city views and bar and restaurants on its doorstep, it’s easy to see why tourists pop it on their must-do list! The Rainbow Bay Surf Club has one of the best views on the Gold Coast.

6. Torakina Beach, Brunswick Heads - if you’ve got kids, tune in. Situated in the sweet little town of what the locals call “Bruns,” Torakina Beach is hidden paradise, where dolphins swim happily in crystal clear, swell free water.

7. Burleigh Beach, Burleigh Heads - if you know, you know. This is the busiest beach on this list, but if you love being in the action it won't disappoint. At sunrise and sunset, the headland is a popular meeting spot for picnics. This beach is always busy and bustling - with a contagious 'hum.'

8. North Kirra / Bilinga Beach - Harriet's local. The patch of beach between North Kirra and Bilinga is quiet, mostly calm and has lovely low dunes separating you from the apartments running along the strip. Bring your bikes and you can ride the length of this beach, stopping off at a place that feels right. Once you've had your beach fix, cycle to Tupe Aloha in Kirra for a margarita and a taco.
